MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees has awarded its prestigious Apprentice of the Year honour to Harry Steptoe, a fourth-year carpentry apprentice, during National Apprenticeship Week 2025.
Harry, who is completing his apprenticeship with MIGAS host company, Clark Constructions, was selected through the rigorous MiScholarship Program, which provides financial support to help apprentices succeed in their training and acquire essential tools of trade.
The selection process included a panel interview with industry leaders, including Stephen Gates, General Manager of TAFE Queensland SkillsTech; Mark Pappas, Manager of the Department of Trade, Employment and Training; and National Director of NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction), Radmila Desic AM.
"Harry is an exceptional young man and an outstanding apprentice," said David Hoey, MIGAS Chief Executive Officer, during the award presentation.
"His dedication to his craft and ability to excel in both studies and practical experience exemplify this year's National Apprenticeship Week theme of 'Skills in Motion’.”
Harry’s most recent achievements include:
- Gold Medal at the 2024 WorldSkills regional final
- Selection to compete in the upcoming National World Skills competition
- Recipient of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship
- Named Carpentry Apprentice of the Year at TAFE Queensland SkillsTech's 2024 Apprentice Awards
Bruce Clarke, Managing Director of Clark Constructions, was also recognised during the ceremony for providing an environment where apprentices can thrive.
"It's because of companies like Clarke Constructions that apprentices like Harry can be free to learn and grow in a safe, inclusive environment that sets ambitious standards," Mr Hoey said.
The award presentation highlighted the importance of the National Apprenticeship Week theme, "Skills in Motion," which celebrates the evolution of skills, knowledge, and expertise that apprentices and trainees develop throughout their career journey.
